Knowing if your Teen Needs Mental Health Help

How do you know if your teenager needs help? How do you know if they are experiencing typical teen angst or something more?

Teenage mental health is so important. According to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health), suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in children ages 10-24. Depression and anxiety are common among teens; however, it does not always look like what we expect it to be in an adult and is often missed.

If you’re concerned about your teenage child’s mental health here are a few things to look for:

  • Withdrawn and isolating more than usual

  • A dramatic change in sleep (more or less)

  • Doing poorly in school or missing significant amounts of school all of a sudden

  • Not spending time doing things they used to love (sports, spending time with friends)

  • Irritable

Therapy can be a safe environment for a teenager to access the support and tools they need. If you’d like more information or are concerned about a teenager in your life, reach out and let’s work on it together. We have therapists who specialize in teenage mental health who would be happy to help.

Whether it is starting weekly therapy, or just coming in for an initial assessment screening, the team at Fancher Psychology is here to help.
